PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool whose hard coat layer is excellent in abrasion resistance at a deep cutting operation and so forth of a hard-to-cut material. SOLUTION: The hard coat layer, which comprises: (a) a lower layer made from (Ti, Al)N layer to satisfy a composition formula: (Ti<SB>1-x</SB>Al<SB>x</SB>)N, in which X ranges from 0.30 to 0.70 by atomic ratio; (b) an intermediary layer made from CrN layer; (c) an upper layer consisting of alternate laminated layers of a chromium oxide layer and a manganese oxide layer or a niobium oxide layer, is formed on a super-hard substrate consisting of a tungsten carbide group cemented carbide or a titanium carbonitride based cermet.
