Specifically disclosed is a backlight (100) comprising a hot cathode fluorescent lamp (10) having a bulb (12), a base (50) provided on an end portion of the hot cathode fluorescent lamp (10), a socket (40) to be connected with an external terminal (52) of the base (50), and a lamp holder (75) for holding the hot cathode fluorescent lamp (10). The external terminal (52) of the base (50) extends in a direction generally perpendicular to the longitudinal direction (92) of the bulb (12) (for example, in a direction opposite to the screen direction (90)), and the lamp holder (75) comprises an elastic member (77) which enables to move the hot cathode fluorescent lamp (10) along the longitudinal direction (92) of the bulb (12).
