PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stable aqueous iodine/iodide/iodate germicidal composition that includes a relatively large amount of free iodine, and substantially maintaining the initially prepared amount of available iodine/free iodine during at least about three-month storage. SOLUTION: The composition comprises about 0.01 to 1.4 wt.% of available iodine, about 10 to 125 ppm of free iodine, about 0.005 to 0.5 wt.% of an iodate ion, about 0.1 to 15 wt.% of a complexing agent, about 0.004 to 0.50 wt.% of an iodide ion and has a pH of about 2 to 5.5.
