There are provided compounds of formulae (I) and (II), and homo- and hetero-dimers and t.pi.mers thereof R1 is -OH, a C1-C12 alkyl, a C2-C12 alkenyl, a C2-C12 alkynyl, a C3-C8 cycloalkyl, a C3-C8 cycloalkenyl, a C6-C12 aryl, or a C1-C12heteroaryl group The compounds are prepared by reaction of glycerol and a boronic acid, or boricor metaboric-acid. Such compounds are useful for treating inflammation and/or pan. In particular, the compounds may be used to accelerate the healing of wounds and/or bums. The compounds are also useful for water treatment, by preventing the presence of bacteria and/or algae, and by reducing the turbidity of water.
