PURPOSE:To enhance current efficiency and reduce electrolytic voltage in electrolysis of an aq. soln. of an alkali metal salt by an ion exchange method, by adding a very slight amt. of a water sol. substance of relatively large MW to a soln. in the cathode chamber. CONSTITUTION:In electrolysis of an aq. soln. of an alkali metal salt such as NaCl with a cation exchange membrane as diaphragm, a water sol. substance of MW above 100 is added to an aq. soln. of a caustic alkali in the cathode chamber. This additive is pref. a polymer or an at least partially ionizable substance, and the amt. of the additive is very little, i.e. below 1%, usually above 1 ppm, pref. about 10- 100 ppm. The additive includes diethylene glycol, PVA. etc. |
