The invention relates to an apparatus for flattening a tubular film (6, 9) into a flat material comprising two superimposed layers (30, 31) of material that are connected at the edges thereof by means of at least two additional layers (34, 35) of material which form lateral folds. Said apparatus has the following features: a plurality of film guiding elements (13) that are arranged in the shape of a roof and define at least two facing planes which limit the space available to the tubular film in the direction of travel (Z) of the tubular film (6, 9) such that the tubular film (6, 9) encompasses two superimposed layers of material after passing the film guiding elements (13); at least two means for inserting lateral folds into the tubular film, said means being disposed between the film guiding elements (13) and being placed at a diminishing distance from each other in the direction of travel (Z) of the tubular film. Lateral bordering means (40) which can be laterally placed against the already largely flattened tubular film are novel and inventive.
