The machine (07) has a folding unit (13) with folding hoppers (23-25) arranged in folding hopper levels for longitudinally folding partial paper webs (20-22) slit by a slitting device (11). A unit (15) is provided between the slitting device and the folding unit, where the adjacent webs are spaced at a distance from each other by the unit before the webs are guided to the hoppers such that the adjacent webs are arbitrarily guided independent of each other in the folding hopper levels. The adjacent hoppers are arranged together within the level corresponding to the distance of the two webs.
