PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing 4-(hydroxymethyl-phosphonyl)-2-oxobutanoic acid of an intermediate for producing herbicide L-AMPB.

SOLUTION: The method for producing the 4-(hydroxymethyl-phosphonyl)-2-oxobutanoic acid uses a compound represented by formula (5) [wherein, R1is an aryl group; R2, R3and R4are each a 1-4C alkyl group; and n is an integer of 1 or 2].
