A position detecting device is provided to accurately detect absolute position of a moving object without causing a complex structure. A position detecting device includes a scale(1), a sensor, and a controller. The scale includes light-emitting diodes arranged at regular intervals in a predetermined moving direction. The sensor is installed on a moving object, detects light from more than one of the light-emitting diodes, and outputs a light-receiving signal indicating light-receiving position. The controller includes a memory device storing the positions of the light-emitting diodes, drives the light-emitting diodes, and calculates the position of the moving object based on the positions of the light-emitting diodes stored in the memory device.
