In a silent chain (1, fig 1), a flank surface 4 which comes into contact with a sprocket tooth (14, fig 3) at the start of engagement has a partially protruding portion 4a continuously formed along the longitudinal direction of the flank surface. Only the partially protruding portions 4a of link plates 2 that initially contact the sprocket teeth are positively caused to wear during running in of the chain, so that protruding portions 4a of flank surfaces 4 of other link plates that did not initially contact the sprocket teeth (14, fig 6) are brought into contact with the sprocket teeth (14, fig 7).
