The invention relates to magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents that report on physiological events in a conditional fashion and simultaneously detect the delivery and/or activation of a therapeutically active agent. The agents are of the following formulae: (see formula I) (see formula II) wherein the linker is an unsubstituted or substituted group selected from alkylene, arylene and hetero arylene groups, and (see formula III).
