The method involves calculating a pulse response of respective transmission line and currently transmitted data symbols for each time point. The number of combinations of data symbol sequences to be considered for calculating the currently transmitted data symbols is reduced compared with the maximally possible number of combinations of data symbol-sequences. Channel calculating hypothesis of the line is utilized for each condition selected in the actual time point in a phase diagram and results from another channel calculating hypothesis of the line in one of the time points. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an equalizer for detecting data symbol-sequences transmitted and transferred over a time-variable transmission line (2) a digital storage medium with a programming code for executing all steps for detecting data symbol-sequences transmitted and transferred over a time-variable transmission line (3) a computer program product with a programming code for executing all steps for detecting data symbol-sequences transmitted and transferred over a time-variable transmission line (4) a computer program with a programming code for executing all steps for detecting data symbol-sequences transmitted and transferred over a time-variable transmission line. |
