The device has an external force actuated parking brake and an automatic transmission that comprises an electrically controllable actuator e.g. switch, for a drive stage insertion. A parking lock is coupled by external force actuation and actuated by a mechanical coupling between the actuator and a locking unit (3) of the parking lock. The locking unit engages in a parking lock wheel (2) in the transmission in an activated condition of the parking lock. The actuator is formed separately as a gear selector lever for adjusting drive stages of the transmission. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a vehicle.
