A rotary drum formed into a bottomed tubular shape is installed in a water tank such that the axis of rotation is directed from the opening front side toward the back side becoming the bottom portion horizontally or inclined downward from the horizontal direction. A control section arc-rotates the rotary drum suddenly by driving a motor suddenly at such a variation rate that the laundry is stuck to the inner surface of the rotary drum by centrifugal force, thus lifting the laundry from the lowermost position, i.e. the 0 degree position, of the rotary drum to a position over 90 degrees and less than 180 degrees. Furthermore, rotation of the motor is braked suddenly at such a variation rate that the laundry falls off the inner surface of the rotary drum, thus dropping the laundry to the side opposite to the lifting side. The control section has a forward/reverse rotation drive mode for repeating a series of such forward and reverse operations alternately.
