PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal aligning agent useful for forming a liquid crystal aligned film excellent in heat resistance by irradiation with linearly polarized ultraviolet rays of a long wavelength by making the agent include a polymer having a specific conjugated enone structure. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal aligning agent contains a polymer having a structure selected from among groups of formulae I and II [P<1> is an aromatic ring-containing bivalent organic group; P<2> is an aromatic ring-containing trivalent organic group; Q<1> and Q<2> are each an aromatic ring-containing monovalent organic group]. The skeleton of the polymer is preferably a polyimide, which is preferably obtained by using a compound having the structure selected from formulae I and II when reacting (A) a tetracarboxylic dianhydride with (B) a diamine compound, then providing a polyamic acid and synthesizing the polyimide. For example, 2,2'-bis(4-chalconyloxy)-3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride is cited as the component A having the structure. |
