A ruthenium-containing dye is provided to realize significantly improved optoelectronic conversion efficiency as compared with conventional dyes, to reinforce the binding force to oxide semiconductor particles, and to improve the efficiency of a solar cell. A ruthenium-containing dye is represented by the following formula 1. In formula 1, ring a1 optionally has at least one substituent, wherein the substituent is selected from halogen atoms, amide, cyano, hydroxyl, nitro, alkoxy and acyl groups; and each of X and Y represents methyl or a compound represented by the following formula 2, with the proviso that at least one of X and Y is a compound represented by formula 2. In formula 2, ring b1 optionally has at least one substituent, wherein the substituent is selected from halogen atoms, amide, cyano, hydroxyl, nitro, alkoxy and acyl groups; and each R represents H or a C1-C15 alkyl.
