N-Oxide radicals or derivatives thereof, with a quat. carbon atom attached to the nitrogen atom and also to a free phosphonic acid or phosphonate diester group are new. Compounds of formula (I) are new. A : aryl or R1R2R3C- (quat. carbon); R1-R3optionally substituted 1-30C aliphatic or aromatic groups (two of which may be linked together); one of the groups R4-R6a free phosphonic acid group or a phosphonate ester group of formula -P(O)(OR8)(OR9), and the others are as described for R1-R3; R7an organic group, preferably an optionally substituted 1-30C aliphatic or aromatic group or a radical; R8, R9H, alkyl or aryl; n : 1-10. alpha indicates a quaternary carbon. Independent claims are included for (1) a method (M1) for the production of (1) by (a) reacting an amine of formla A-NH2 with a ketone of formula R4-CO-R5 and a phosphonate R6H of formula HP(O)(OR8)(OR9) to give A-NH-CR4R5R6 (preferably with R8 and R9 not H), (b) reacting with an oxidising agent to form the corresponding N-oxide and optionally (c) reacting with R7-(halogen)n (2) a method (M2) for the production of polymers by radical polymerisation in presence of (I), especially as polymerisation starters and regulators.
