A channel tuning device for an image display device and a method therefor are provided to correct a frequency by a tuning difference step and lock a channel accurately when grasping the tuning difference of the frequency and tuning the channel according to the grasped result. A tuner(210) tunes a channel tuned by a user. A channel decoder(220) generates a broadcasting signal of the channel tuned through the tuner as a bit stream, and transmits the bit stream to a demultiplexer(230). The demultiplexer receives the bit stream generated in the channel decoder, divides the received bit stream into video, audio, and additional information. A control unit(290) grasps whether the channel tuned through the tuner is in a locked state. When the channel tuned through the tuner is in the locked state, the control unit grasps QoS(Quality of Signal), parses NIT(Network Information Table) information of SI(Signal Information) from the additional information divided through the demultiplexer, and judges tuning difference conditions of a center frequency.
