APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR ERROR DETECTION/CORRECTION USING REED-SOLOMON PRODUCT CODES

An apparatus and a method for detecting and correcting error using Reed-Solomon Product Codes are provided to update effectively syndrome by executing repeatedly detection and correction. Demodulated signals are received and stored. PI(Parity on Inner code) and PO(Parity on Outer code) syndromes on the demodulated signals are calculated(510). The calculated PI and PO syndromes are stored(520). Values and positions of error on the PI and PO syndromes are detected and corrected based on the syndromes stored in memories(530). The stored PI and PO syndromes are updated based on the values and positions of the error. The updated syndromes are delivered to the memories(540-560). A value of an error detected position on the same type syndromes is updated to zero. A value of an error detected position on different type syndromes is updated based on a syndrome value before updating and an error detected syndrome value.
