A curable aqueous composition is provided to contain little or no formaldehyde, and to be useful as a formaldehyde-free binder for producing heat-resistant nonwoven fabrics having improved flexibility and wet strength and a reduced discoloration tendency. A curable aqueous composition includes (a) at least one polycarboxy (co)polymer comprising at least two carboxylic acid groups, anhydride groups, or salts thereof, (b) polymer particles of at least one emulsion (co)polymer having a glass transition temperature(Tg) less than 80 °C when determined by the FOX equation, and (c) at least one polyol represented by the following formula 1. The polycarboxy (co)polymer(a) is an addition polymer or copolymer comprising at least one copolymerized ethylene unsaturated carboxylic acid-containing monomer.
