PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for easily and efficiently producing L-carnitine without needing multi-steps. SOLUTION: This method for producing L-carnitine comprises the following processes. (1) The process for making a cyanide donor to act on a 1,3-dihalogeno-2-propanol in the presence of a halohydrin epoxidase to optically selectively obtain (R)-4-halo-3-hydroxybutyronitrile. (2) The process for replacing the halogen of the (R)-4-halo-3-hydroxybutyronitrile by a trialkylamine to obtain the L-carnitine nitrile halide. (3) The process for hydrolyzing the nitrile group of the L-carnitine nitrile halide to obtain the L-carnitine. Thereby, the L-carnitine can efficiently be obtained from the 1,3-dihalo-2-propanol not having an asymmetric carbon at only three steps. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
