PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely acquire a sufficient liquid head to return a liquid to the front distillation column when returning the liquid condensed in a condenser making use of its liquid head in a distillation apparatus of a cascade process where a plurality of distillation columns to be used for isotope concentration or the like are connected in series. SOLUTION: The distillation apparatus comprises a group of a plurality of distillation columns 12 cascade-connected with each other equipped with a condenser and a reboiler, a feed gas line 11 for feeding a gas from a distillation column to the next distillation column making use of the pressure difference between two distillation columns, a gas line 13 for sending a gas from the distillation column 12 to a condenser 14 belonging to the distillation column, a liquid line 16 for withdrawing a condensate from the condenser 14, a reflux line 18 for returning part of the condensate from the liquid line 16 to the distillation column, a liquid-returning line 17 for returning the remainder of the condensate from the liquid line 16 to the front distillation column 12 and a bypass line 20 for connecting the liquid-returning line 17 and the gas line 13.
