PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator having improved safety and user-friendliness while determining the malfunction of a braking device. SOLUTION: In the elevator, when a passenger car 7 is in such a non-loaded condition that there is no passenger or cargo, a brake control device 31 actuates the braking device 2. A current control device 4 controls an inverter 3 to supply a current il to a hoisting machine 1. The current il is a current such that the sum of hoisting machine torque Tm which is generated by the supply of the current, and unbalance torque Tu is equal to braking torque Tb when the braking device 2 is normally actuated. A brake holding force determiner 10 determines that the braking device 2 is abnormally actuated when a change component of a hoisting machine rotating angle or a hoisting machine rotating speed detected by a hoisting machine position-speed detector 5 exceeds a reference value and a change component of a car position or a car elevating speed detected by a car position-speed detector 8 exceeds a reference value.
