The invention relates to the use of a non-human animal in an animal model for studying neurodevelopmental disorders and their complications and/or for assaying novel treatments and drugs for treating neurodevelopmental disorders and their complications in humans, which animal has an alteration in its genome as compared to the wild type animal, which alteration leads to a modified expression of Aph-lb. In a particular embodiment, the alteration leads to a decreased expression of Aph-lb. The animal is for example an Aphlb I/I animal. The invention further relates to use of the animal model in drug discovery.
