PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating device (27) for coating a powdery molding material layer in an apparatus (1) for producing a three-dimensional object by solidifying the layer of the shape of the molding material at the position of each layer corresponding to the object.

SOLUTION: A coating element (61) for coating the powdery molding material in the layered shape and a driving mechanism (59) which moves the coating element (61) along a molding plane (11) in order to coat the molding material layer are provided. The driving mechanism (59) has an operation piston/cylinder system (69) and an interception piston/cylinder system (70).
