The method involves determining a system response to a certain system input during a period. A probable system response that characterizes an actual system condition is determined from the determined system response by statistic evaluation. A examination is made whether the determined system response deviates from determined probable system response in statistically secured manner, during another period. A change of a position of an accelerator pedal (36) and/or a position of a throttle valve (30) is covered by the system input.
