A seismic sensor comprises a frame 102, a pendulum 101 pivotably mounted to the frame; a mechanism 104, 105 for sensing angular position of the pendulum; and a monolithic flat spring 106 oriented between the frame and the pendulum for balancing the pendulum at an equilibrium position. The monolithic flat spring 106 comprises an operating region 1 for providing a restoring force to the pendulum proportional to an angular displacement of the pendulum; and a suspension region 2 for transmitting a force to a portion of the operating region but applying a negligible bending moment M2 to the portion of the operating region 1. The spring may include a preformed bend between the operating region and the suspension region. The width and/or thickness of the spring may vary along its length, and hence its stiffness may vary with length. The stiffness in the suspension region is preferably substantially less than in the operating region. |
