A display device and a control method thereof are provided to sense the motion of an object and to reduce the brightness of a displayed image if the motion of the object is not sensed, thereby reducing power consumption. A display unit(40) displays an image. A display driver(20) drives the display unit. A motion sensor(10) senses a motion of an object located within a predetermined distance from the display unit. If the amount of the motion sensed by the motion sensor is less than a predetermined reference value, a controller(50) controls the display driver so as to reduce brightness of an image displayed on the display unit.
