A mobile communication terminal and an operation method thereof are provided to analyze a distance between a user and the mobile communication terminal by analyzing an inputted image signal of a camera, so that the current mode can be automatically operated as a speaker phone mode. An image processor(20) analyzes an image signal inputted from a camera(10), calculates lightness in accordance with the image signal, and compare image data in accordance with the image signal with reference image data. A controller(30) compares the calculated lightness with reference lightness, and if the lightness is less than the reference lightness, the controller enables a call to be performed in one of a general speech mode and a speaker phone mode according to a matching rate between the image data and the reference image data.
