In a long gap discharge by applying a trigger discharge to a PDP display cell with three electrodes (X, Y, A), a floating electrode is used to stably generate the trigger discharge with low power consumption. A long gap (Lg) is formed between first and second display electrodes (51b, 52b) in a dielectric layer of a PDP, first and second floating electrodes (51c, 52c) are formed between the first and second display electrodes (51b, 52b), and a short gap (Lz) is formed between the first and second floating electrodes (51c, 52c). When a sustaining pulse applied to the first and second display electrodes (51b, 52b), a minute trigger voltage is generated at the short gap (Lz) and a main discharge is then generated at the long gap (Lg), following the minute trigger discharge. The electrodes and capacitances are formed in such structure that the intensity of the main discharge can be equal to or less than 1/5 of that of the trigger discharge.
