The present invention relates to the use of a yeast extract in a cosmetic composition or for the preparation of a pharmaceutical composition, as active agent intended to promote increased melanin synthesis in the melanocytes of the epidermis or the hair bulb. The yeast extract is mainly constituted of compounds of protein and peptide nature and is obtained from yeast of the genus Saccharomyces or Kluyveromyces.
