<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator and a projection type video display device capable of restraining cost increase in the entire device even when using four or more color light beams. <P>SOLUTION: An illumination unit 120 is equipped with a plate-type separation optical device 80 where a dichroic surface 81 to reflect green component light and transmit yellow component light, and a PBS surface 82 to transmit P polarized component light and reflect S polarized component light are formed. The separation optical device 80 synthesizes red component light made incident from one direction and transmitted through the dichroic surface 81 and the yellow component light made incident from the other direction and reflected by the PBS surface 82 and guides the light to a liquid crystal panel 40R side, and synthesizes the green component light made incident from one direction and reflected by the dichroic surface 81 and the yellow component light made incident from the other direction and transmitted through the PBS surface 82 and guides the light to a liquid crystal panel 40G side. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT</p> |
