PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for supplying cover gas, which has sufficient preventive effects of oxidation-combustion and prevents cost increase by containing a necessary and sufficient amount of fluoroketone in the cover gas in supplying cover gas containing fluoroketone in a melting furnace of magnesium to prevent oxidation and combustion of a molten metal of magnesium. SOLUTION: The moisture concentration of gas in the melt furnace 1 is measured, and the concentration of fluoroketone in the cover gas is adjusted to a range from 1/50-1/5 relative to the moisture concentration. The oxygen concentration in an atmosphere in the melting furnace is measured to calculate the moisture concentration based on the oxygen concentration and moisture content in the air outside the melting furnace 1, or inert gas concentration in an atmosphere in the melting furnace is measured to calculate the moisture concentration based on the inert gas concentration and the moisture content in the air outside the melting furnace.
