In the apparatus, a coin to be tested and a standard are compared in a pair of similar reactors the reactance and resistance of which is modified by their presence, the reactors being connected with two further impedances in a bridge which is supplied with R.F. power and has a null output when the tested coin is genuine. The bridge, Fig. 2, which comprises inductors I 1 , and I 2 for housing the standard and receiving the coin under test, respectively, and capacitors BC1, BC2, shunted by their respective trimmers, is fed from a modified Hartley oscillator OSC, and the output after amplification in valve VT2 is rectified in a diode VT3 to fire a gas tube GT1. The oscillator frequency is in the order of 100 kc/s. to 10 mc/s. and preferably has a high harmonic content. Solenoid AR in the anode circuit of tube GT1 controls an interceptor C1 across the bottom of the coin slot in inductor I2 to block the passage if the coin is spurious. A modified circuit described with respect to Fig. 10 (not shown), includes also a phase-discriminator whereby both the amplitude and phase or phases of the harmonics in the output are compared, a direct current amplifier in the discriminator output circuit, and a magnetic amplifier, the control winding of which is energized from the D.C. amplifier connected to supply mains power to the solenoid. The bottom of the coin slot P, Fig. 3, has a counterbored or flared opening at its lower end, the inner edges of which provide lateral stops for the interceptor C1 which comprises an extension of a pivoted armature controlled by the solenoid AR. Two shoots BC, GC are mounted on a bracket 27 attached to a panel 29 with their channels diverging to provide separate discharge points. A fresh button PR is provided to deflect the interceptor and return a spurious coin. In a coin sorting and counting arrangement, Fig. 8, coins of different denominations are fed down a shoot having test inductors I2A-I2C each included in a separate bridge including an inductor I1A-I1C containing a different standard coin. The bridge outputs are applied to control deflectors GA-GC through amplifiers and interceptor actuators including mechanical linkages LKA-LKC so that the coins are sorted into containers CRA-CRC and mounted on counters CTA-CTC responsive to the actuators. A bridge including selectable capacitors between the plates of which coins may be passed and selectable capacitors including different standard coins is described with reference to Fig. 12 (not shown). The capacitors may be switched in individually or in parallel. The bridge or bridges may form part of the oscillator tank circuit.</p>
