<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sort checks after reading based on the result of reading magnetic ink characters and images even in a compact check reading device short in conveyance path. <P>SOLUTION: In the check reading device 1, a distance from a reading position 54A of a magnetic head 54 to a print position 56A of a printing mechanism 56 for endorsement is set to be almost the same as the length of a check 4, and after the top of the check 4 after reading is conveyed to the print position 56A at a constant speed, the conveyance of the check 4 is temporarily stopped, and after determining the reading quality, the conveyance is restarted, and endorsement is printed to the check having been normally read, and the check is distributed to a first check discharge part 7.
