PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that a liquid adhering to the discharge surface of a head solidifies outside the area covered with a capping member by being left alone for many hours and prevents the cap member from reliably coming into contact with the discharge surface as an obstacle at the time of subsequent capping. SOLUTION: The liquid discharge device has a liquid discharge head 1 discharging droplets, a head tank 2 as a liquid supply means to supply the liquid discharged to the liquid discharge head 1, the cap member 3 capping the nozzle surface (discharge surface) 1a which keeps the nozzle of the liquid discharge head 1 open, and a moisture-retaining solution tank 6 as a holding means to hold a moisture-retaining solution 5 immersed at least from the side higher than the abutting surface between the cap member 3 and the nozzle surface (discharge surface) to the lower side of the cap member 3, and is provided with a through-hole 3a which fronts on the moisture-retaining solution 5 and opens when immersed with the moisture-retaining solution 5 in the lower portion of the cap member 3.
