摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device and method by which illuminance distribution is obtained at high speed by a simple circuit as compared with prior arts without increasing an operation processing time nor memory capacity even when the number of light sources or the number of steps of controlling illuminance are increased, and image display with a high dynamic range and high grayscale degree can be performed. SOLUTION: The image display device has: an optical modulation element having a plurality of pixels; a plurality of light sources which illuminate the optical modulation element and each of which is independently controlled; a light source control value setting section that sets control values for each of the light sources according to the grayscale degree of each pixel of an input image; light sensors provided on each area in the unit of n pixels (n is an integer equal to or greater than 1); an illuminance detection section that detects the illumination of the areas by the light sensors; and a grayscale degree controlling section that corrects the grayscale degree of each pixel according to the detected illumination and controls the optical modulation element by the corrected grayscale degree.
