PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stator manufacturing method, by which generation of thin portions of an insulation layer during pressing process is suppressed to eliminate deterioration in an insulation property and damage to the insulation layer, in the stator manufacturing method having a process for pressing wire layers in a core direction after forming the wire layers by winding the wire around a core, and to provide an insulation-coated wire used in this method. SOLUTION: The stator manufacturing method includes a winding process for winding the insulation-coated wire around the core to form the wire layers and a compression process for compressing the wire layers in the core direction. The insulation-coated wire is composed of conductor wires and an insulation layer covering the conductor wires. The insulation layer is made of a material deformable by the compression, having two mutually facing thick layers at a cross-section which is vertical to the longitudinal direction of the insulation-coated wire, to wind the wire so that the thick layer part of the insulation-coated wire is disposed in the core direction.
