PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-pressure discharge lamp for a horizontal lighting with practical life secured and a high-pressure discharge lamp lighting device using it by preventing blowing out of a translucent airtight vessel due to temperature imbalance through reduction of temperature difference during lighting of the translucent airtight vessel. SOLUTION: The high-pressure discharge lamp is provided with a translucent airtight vessel 1, to be lit horizontally, made of translucent polycrystalline alumina ceramics, with its thick part at a main part of both sides in a horizontal direction made thinner than that of a top part in a vertical direction with its linear transmission rate exceeding 20%, and equipped with an enveloped part 1a with a discharge space 1c formed inside and a small-diameter cylinder part 1b communicated with the enveloped part, a current-introducing conductor 3 inserted into and sealed inside the small-diameter cylinder part of the translucent airtight vessel, an electrode 2 sealed and mounted in the translucent airtight vessel by being connected to a tip side of the current-carrying conductor, and an ionized medium sealed inside the translucent airtight vessel.
