Disclosed is an azo metal chelate dye which is suitably used in a recording layer for an optical recording medium having multiple recording layers or an optical recording medium capable of being recorded at high speed. Also disclosed is an optical recording medium. Specifically disclosed is an azo metal chelate dye comprising an azo dye compound represented by the general formula (1) and a metal. General Formula (1) wherein R<SUB>1</SUB> represents a linear or branched alkyl group which may be substituted or a cycloalkyl group which may be substituted; R<SUB>2</SUB> and R<SUB>3</SUB> independently represent a hydrogen atom, a linear or branched alkyl group which may be substituted, an aryl group which may be substituted, or a heterocyclic group which may be substituted; R<SUB>4</SUB>, R<SUB>5</SUB>, R<SUB>6</SUB>, R<SUB>7</SUB> and R<SUB>8</SUB> independently represent a hydrogen atom or a linear or branched alkyl group which may be substituted, provided that R<SUB>4</SUB> and R<SUB>5</SUB>, R<SUB>4</SUB> and R<SUB>6</SUB> or R<SUB>5</SUB> and R<SUB>7</SUB> may together form a ring; and Y represents a linear or branched alkyl group which is substituted by at least two fluorine atoms, provided that the chelate dye is formed from a product produced by eliminating a proton from the compound of the formula (1) and a metal.
