<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector having excellent light resistance and heat resistance and long service life and capable of restraining a contrast decrease caused by the effect of return light arising in a liquid crystal panel or the like. <P>SOLUTION: A first polarization element 42c is disposed in a position where it is rotated around x axis as viewed from a paper surface. This makes it possible for the liquid crystal panel 41c and the first polarization element 42c to be disposed so as not to be parallel to each other, while minimizing a change in the cyclic pitch width of a recessed-and-projecting structure of the first polarization element 42c with respect to incident light and a change in the shape of a multi-layer structure.
