METHOD OF ELIMINATING LOW-LUMINANCE NOISE AND IMAGE COMPRESSION APPARATUS

A method for detecting low-luminance noise and an image compression apparatus therefor are provided to apply a low-luminance noise removing algorithm to input images selectively without applying the low-luminance noise removing algorithm to all input images, thereby being applied to a low-performance processor and reducing power consumption to increase a batter life and photograph a high-definition image when applied to a portable phone. A median value calculator(120) calculates a median value by using a median filter for pixels of a partial area on an input image when the image is inputted. A low-luminance noise determination unit(130) determines whether a difference between the median value and the original pixel value of the partial area exceeds a low-luminance noise determination threshold value, counts the number of pixels exceeding the low-luminance noise determination threshold value, and checks the distribution of the low-luminance noise to determine whether the image includes the low-luminance noise. A low-luminance noise removing unit(140) performs a low-luminance noise removing algorithm for the input image only when the input image includes the low-luminance noise.
