An apparatus and a method for controlling an LCD are provided to control white balance by changing color temperature of a backlight LED lamp of a module applied to the LCD, thereby previously preventing frequency characteristic reduction of a signal. An image processor(200) processes an inputted image signal so as to be outputted to an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) module(300). An LED(Light Emitting Diode) backlight unit(320) supplies RGB(Red, Green and Blue) light sources to the LCD module. A backlight driver(330) controls driving of the LED backlight unit. A controller(400) receives white color coordinates from the LCD module to determine whether the inputted white color coordinates are consistent with preset setup coordinates. The controller outputs a control signal to the backlight driver so as to output different brightness through the LED backlight unit according to color temperature set by a user. A key input unit(100) receives a command a user requests, and a memory(500) stores information of predetermined color temperatures.
