<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a decomposition/removal method of aldehydes which can certainly decompose and remove harmful substances such as aldehydes in the air at normal temperatures and keep a decomposition/removal capability over a long period of time. <P>SOLUTION: This decomposition/removal method of aldehydes employs a harmful substance purging catalyst which is equipped with a porous carrier formed of an active carbon with not more than 50 μm average particle diameter and 600 to 1,500 m<SP>2</SP>/g specific surface area and a metallic fine particle, borne by a carrier, which is formed of platinum and covered with a specified anion surfactant. Further, the metallic fine particle covered with the anion surfactant is borne by at least, a mesopore and a macropore of the porous carrier.
