A reconfigurable FC-AL(Fiber Channel-Arbitrated Loop) storage loop within a data storage system is provided to keep conventional software, firmware, and micro code base interfaces and to offer an enclosure which is able to accept enclosure design of multiple instances. A data storage system comprises a first and a second storage enclosures(810,850). Each enclosure comprises a disk controller, a plurality of hard disks, and an intra-enclosure path located between the first and second arrays. Wherein, the disk controller is divided into a first and a second instance, and the hard disks are made up of a first and a second disk arrays, and controlled by the first and second instances respectively. The intra-enclosure path is disabled during regular operation of the storage system. The data storage system comprises a first inter-enclosure path and a second inter- enclosure path. The first and the second inter-enclosure paths are enabled during the regular operation of the storage system.
