The invention comprises 16a -hydroxy-5b -pregnane-3,11,20-trione and the preparation thereof by aerobically subjecting 5b -pregnane-3,11,20 trione to the oxygenating activity of the fungus Sepedonium ampullosporum. The fermentation may be effected under submerged conditions in the presence of assimilable non-steroidal carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. Compositions containing the above compound and having central nervous depressant activity are administered orally as pills, tablets, capsules, syrups or elixirs, or by injection in liquid forms.
