<p>Emitter excitation light (108) having a wavelength of ?1 emitted from a light source (101) is collected by a collecting lens (102) to an emitter (107). The emitter (107) is held on a substrate (104), and emits fluorescence having a wavelength of ?2 when irradiated with the emitter excitation light (108) having the wavelength of ?1. Since the diameter (a) of the emitter (107) is smaller than the wavelength ?2, the fluorescent includes an evanescent wave and travels in the substrate (104) as object illuminating light (109) having the emitter (107) as a point light source. A negative refractive lens (105) is arranged to focus the image of the emitter (107) on the surface of the object (106). Thus, not only propagating light components included in the object illuminating light (109) but also the evanescent wavelength components are collected at the same time, and a fine beam spot having a size substantially the same as that of the emitter (107) is formed on the surface of the object (106).</p> |
