PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce thickness and facilitate adjustment of an optical axis in a rear projection type video display apparatus and an optical unit for generating image light. SOLUTION: The optical unit U for generating image light includes: an illuminating optical system 1; an optical system 2 that generates image light by receiving illuminating light from the illuminating optical system 1; an L-type projection optical system 3 that receives an image light from the optical system 2 and projects magnified image light perpendicular to the direction of the input of the image light; and an aspherical mirror 4 that is disposed close to the L-type projection optical system 3 and reflects the projection image light.
