A sheet-like object and a ball suitably used for volleyball game or beach volleyball game. The sheet-like object is formed by layering a polymer elastic cover layer on the surface of a fiber base. Continuous ridges and noncontinuous grooves are formed in the surface of the cover layer. The noncontinous grooves are formed at an average interval of 0.5 - 3 mm and have a depth in the range of 50 - 500 µm. Also, each groove has a vertical projection area of 1 - 5 mm2, and the ratio of the sum of the vertical projection areas of the grooves to the area of the cover layer is in the range of 3 - 30%. The ball has good controllability required throughout a game including toss and serves and has a very smooth degree of stall when it flies. Also, the ball has an appearance with good design not available before and also has sufficient surface friction strength.
