The method involves detecting temperature rise of a gas storage material of a temperature sensor (1) occurring during exothermal modification change over from a modification into another modification, where the gas storage material comprises cerium oxide. A measure for a deterioration condition of an emission control component is derived from a volume of the detected temperature rise.
